“SMC
is so much better than other community colleges and—can I
say this?—it’s really, really cheap to come here!”
In a competitive
world, athletes are the first to push the extremes in pursuit
of their goals. And for SMC student Gary Weber, sacrifice has
been no stranger. “On my high school wrestling team, I dropped
down to 112 pounds and wrestled at that weight for four years,”
says the lanky young man who probably weighs in at a natural 155
pounds. “But all that starvation and discipline paid off
in my senior year when I became league champion.”
And though
he is now “giving back to my old high school” as a coach
of the wrestling team, it’s another ‘league’ that
he intends to join soon: the league of Big Business. “I’m
a double major in Accounting and MIS, because I figure that both
skills will make me competitive in the business arena,” says
Gary. “I actually think computers are fun and, from what
I understand, systems analysis might very well be the way for
me to go. I’m sure that I’ll go all the way to an MBA,”
he adds. “But how I’ll actually put it to use, I just
don’t know. I’m actually just beginning to discover
all the things that I can do at SMC.”
Gary states
that, on the wrestling mats or in the classroom, “coaching
is always important—no matter where you’re competing.
And sometimes the people you’re competing against make the
best coaches. So my thought is to make as many friends as I can
at SMC and learn from them.”
