“The
Scholars Program, the Women’s College, the Associated Students…we
have so many resources that you’ll never find your way to
unless you’re involved.”
“I majored
in the ‘seven-year-plan,’” says Dylan Douglas of
the five years he’s spent at SMC. “I was originally
in Music, but then I switched to Computer Science. And you just
have to start over when you make a career shift that big.”
But Dylan doesn’t lament the loss of time that he’s
spent at SMC. “Since I’ve been here so long, I’ve
racked up about 140 units, and I’m a total 4.0. It’s
been a lot of tough work,” he says wearily, “but
now UCLA has to accept me.”
If Dylan
had simply finished all his classes, it would have been impressive
enough. But he’s explored almost every aspect of what SMC
has to offer. “I’m the Director of Academic Support
for the Associated Students, and it’s my job to get students
appointed to committees…and to show up,” he says with
a laugh. “But I’m also the student member of the Academic
Senate, where I’m the liaison between the Senate and the
AS board.” In his role with the Academic Senate, Dylan has
formed a close bond with Senate President Charles Donaldson. “Oh,
he’s such an excellent teacher of Journalism and English,”
says Dylan. “He cares deeply about us and wants us to succeed.
And he’s always there to proofread your reports and suggest
ways that you can improve.” But Dylan adds that it’s
not only teachers who can make improvement a way of life.
“The
students at our college are one of our greatest resources,”
he says. “We have all of these clubs and organizations on
campus, and joining up with them can make your life so much easier.
Tutoring services, the Associated Students…
oh there’s so much! I just wish I’d joined earlier;
it might have speeded me up a little. But now,” he adds,
“I’ve been here long enough!”
