Marlo Rabuy

Professor

“I like to think of what we do as ‘holistic development,’ you know? Where you learn just as much outside the classroom as you do inside the classroom.”

She had a good feeling about SMC as far back as her 1999 internship here. That feeling hasn’t changed now that she’s with us full time. “I love what I do as the counselor for the Associated Students because I get to do a little of everything,” says Marlo Rabuy. “I’m teaching Human Development 20—with a strong leadership emphasis—and I thoroughly enjoy the reactions I’m getting in class. What I also enjoy,” she continues, “is all the follow-up we do for our students, which ensures consistency. I have them two solid years, and I get to see what’s going on in their lives as well as how they’re doing academically.”

Marlo states that “there’s a lot of extracurricular activity that goes on with the AS, so there’s never a dull moment. I get to plan a lot of activities, assist students making retreats for their clubs, and bring guest speakers and performers to our campus. There’s terrific variety in what I do, and I’m just loving every minute of it.”

“Support and encouragement” are the two most important qualities Marlo feels that she brings to her work. “I’m a counselor who believes that anyone can accomplish anything if empowered to do so,” she says. “It’s not so much about me giving answers as it is about giving people options and ideas, and motivating them to have a positive attitude. And I’m very proud of our department,” she continues. “We have a really strong leadership who strongly believes in student success and promotes this idea through the whole staff. We truly work as a team. I mean, there’s a reason for SMC’s reputation.” Counseling is a very nice part of it.
