“The
AS should be your best friend at SMC—because we’re students
too, and we’re your resources. If you’ve got a problem,
it’s our job to provide solutions.”
“Yep,
I’m the AS President…, or I was, the last time
I checked,” says Jeff Gordon with a laugh. “And it’s
been a very busy time for us with all the Measure U work we’re
doing. We’ve poured a lot of our financial resources into
the campaign, as well as having students work the phone bank,
walk the precincts, and register citizens to vote,” says
Jeff. “You can easily pick the buildings on the campus that
need to be replaced, and you hope that they’ll soon look
like our amazing Science Complex,” he says. “We already
are a world-class college. And when Measure U passes,” he
adds with confidence, “we’re going to look like
a world-class college as well.” [Ed. Note: Measure U passed
successfully!]
But quite
aside from the appearance of SMC and all of the upgrades going
on, Jeff points to one single element of SMC life that is the
College’s greatest resource. “It’s really just
the faculty here and the intense experiences you have working
with them in small classrooms,” says Jeff. “You know
who your teachers are, they know you, and they’re
very accessible to meet with personally during their office
hours.”
Readying
for transfer to CSUN or UCLA to further study broadcasting, Jeff
reports that “Frank Dawson has been an excellent broadcasting
teacher for me. And he’s like so many others at SMC: They’ve
worked in their professional fields and are very generous in sharing
their experience with students.” But “sharing”
also has another meaning in Jeff’s SMC lexicon. “Getting
involved in student clubs or government is so important,”
he says. “You get to really know your surroundings and share
with other students. And then, suddenly, you’ll see your
GPA just starting to rise….”
