“I
was accepted by USC straight out of high school—and I’ll
transfer there from SMC. But I thought, ‘Hey! Why not save
about $50,000 bucks and have the same quality of education?’”
“I’ve
spoken to people who went to USC out of high school, and they’ve
told me, ‘Sharon, you made the absolutely smartest decision,’”
says Sharon Neman, who was feeling about $50,000 to the good.
“Maybe I haven’t had that ‘Big University’
feeling at SMC. But you know what? When I do get to USC Marshall
School of Business, I’m going to be one of the best-educated
students in my class because I know what I want to do now. At
SMC,” she continues, “I didn’t waste money, and
I got a chance to see what I really liked doing best.”
Business/Law?
Law/Business? Sharon says that the best way to find your direction
in education is to keep your options open. “I’ve worked
at banks, I’ve worked at law firms, and I’m a natural
‘multitasker,’ so I plan to do as much sampling and
investigating as I can to find out what’s the best arena
for me,” she says. “An MBA? A degree in Law? I don’t
know… but I will! But here, I really got to think about
the choices I wanted to make. And that’s why SMC has been
such a good experience. If I’d gone straight to a university,
it would have been a huge waste of time and money. And because
I work and study,” adds Sharon, “it’s been
great to be able to take night classes because of my schedule.
I’ve taken at least one night class a week, and there’s
really no difference between those and the classes I take during
the day.”
Sharon proclaims
that “the class I took in Business Law with Ms. Klugman was
the most practical class of all the ones that I’ve taken
at SMC. Her teaching put it all in perspective and made it come
alive. You have to learn science, history, and all the rest to
become a balanced person,” she adds. “But the flexibility
of SMC—and the low cost—allow you to make the most of
your two years here.”
