“Night classes are a little bit longer, but if you’ve got to work during the day, they’re a really good option for you.”

“When I first got to SMC, I really didn’t know anybody at all,” says Randy Adam Romero of his initial immersion at the College. “But then I got involved in Associated Students and started joining clubs, and that helped me to get to know the campus and get involved in College affairs. It’s just very motivating to be around a lot of other busy people you actually look forward to working with.”

Although studying philosophy and art history, Randy has his sight set on law school. “I think I’ll be going into criminal law,” he says. “I’ve been through a few programs like mock trials and debates, and I think I’ll feel really good working in a courtroom.” Hoping to soon hone his argumentation by joining the Debate Club, Randy says his English language skills have greatly improved at SMC. “I had a very excellent class with Mr. Roberts,” he says. “I enjoyed his style of teaching, and he always got everybody excited. You just couldn’t be lazy in his classroom. You had to get involved.” And Randy’s life at SMC is all about involvement.

“I’m currently in the PTK Honors Society, and I joined with the Latino Student Union, where we did a lot of social events and volunteering,” he says. “It was a lot of fun being around so many hard-working people.” Yet another motivation of Randy’s is the technology he’s found at SMC. “It’s just great here. It’s all right up to date, and the computers are very fast and well maintained. You’d think with so many students banging on them that they might just shut down. But it all works like a charm.”
