“We have really nice weather, people are easy to get along with, the classes are fun, and the teachers are great. I mean, what else
is
there?”
It wasn’t the best day of her life as Brittnay Bowden was heading off to the funeral of her beloved grandmother. Still, she agreed to be interviewed for this SMC profile because—as she said—“Life has to go on.” Her cellphone is an Ohio number, which she hadn’t yet changed since her arrival in California. “I actually decided to come to SMC because of my brother. He used to live here, and he told me this college was the best. It was really good advice!”
It’s the world of fashion and the business of it that Brittnay wants to conquer on her transplant to the West Coast. “I’m studying economics because I’m good at numbers, and I want to be good at the business end of things. But I just love fashion, too, because I feel I’m very creative, and I think making gorgeous fashion statements can really draw all that creativity out of me. Also, California has a way of creating fashions that just seem to get picked up all over the world. And I’d like to think that I can catch a ride on that creative wave before I transfer to another university in some other state.”
Brittnay states, “I’ve had really awesome teachers at SMC. The environment here is very welcoming, and people are easy to meet. I’ve made a lot of good friends. I do miss home and some of my old friends,” she admits. “But SMC has made me feel relaxed and confident.” One class of Brittnay’s that made her confidence soar was her current favorite. “I’m taking English 1 with Mr. Winkler, and he’s an incredible teacher. He includes literature, writing, a lot of speaking, and discussions. I feel like he makes all of us get better and more confident with the English language every day.” And that’s Brittnay. Well spoken and
always
well dressed.
