“I’m actually the first in my family to go to college. And it’s a real honor for me to open the pathways for my younger siblings.”
“I’d have to say that Peter Morse—in Physics 14—was a really great teacher for me,” says Stephanie Toledo, who is just one semester shy of getting her AA degree. “Physics is a very tough subject, but he helped us all to understand some very difficult material. He was always like a friend. And that’s what students need; someone they can approach and feel confident about their giving you help.” Giving help is definitely what Stephanie is all about.
“I’m studying psychology, because I think there are a lot of troubled people nowadays who really need someone to talk with. And when I transfer to UCLA, I want to get into their Marriage, Family & Child Counseling (MFCC) program. Divorce rates are pretty terrible these days,” Stephanie continues. “And I’d like to become the ‘glue’ that helps keep those families together.” Born in America, but with Central-American roots, Stephanie reports, “My family is very much behind me in the plans that I’ve made for the future. I wasn’t always as clear about what I want to do, so I switched majors a few times,” she says. “But now—with all the knowledge that I’m gaining—I’m beginning to feel real confidence. And I’m just looking forward to UCLA, and becoming even more focused.”
Stephanie adds, “I’d definitely recommend SMC to any and all Latinos looking for a great education. We’ve got the Adelante and EOPS programs, which have really helped me out. The Latino Center is filled with great people who are working to keep you on-track and centered in your life. So if any Latinos out there are thinking about college,” she adds, “SMC has all the resources to get you where you need to go.”
