Most of our professional certification courses and our licensure courses prepare students to meet the qualifications required to take State or national examinations. Some courses, however, award certification upon successful completion of the course. Our continuing education courses award CE credit approved to satisfy requirements for professional continuing education. In all cases, courses DO NOT carry academic credit or assign letter grades.
ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG (AOD) COUNSELOR
Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counselor Certification Training
This 155-hour program prepares individuals to qualify for the State examination to become a Certified Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counselor. The program is offered through Santa Monica College’s Workforce Development Department, one of only two substance abuse training providers approved through the I-Train system recognized by One-Stop Centers. This certification is mandatory for working in the substance abuse counseling field. Topics covered include substance abuse theories, counseling methods, ethics, treatment processes, client rights, substance effects, etc. The program meets the certification criteria mandated under Chapter 8 Amendments of the California Code of Regulations, and is recognized by the California Certification Board of Chemical Dependency Counseling of the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs (ADP). The Personal Fitness Training Professional Certificate program—offered as an online series of interactive courses with an optional field internship—is designed for individuals seeking an exciting new career in the emerging field of personal training, as well as established allied health and fitness professionals from all fields—including athletic trainers, wellness consultants, and registered dietitians—seeking continuing education. REAL ESTATE
These courses meet the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) requirements for applicants for California Real Estate License examinations.
Each course consists of 45 hours of classroom instruction plus a final exam. You must complete the course AND take and pass the final exam to receive credit for the course. The final exam is given at the final class meeting, and there will be NO MAKE-UP EXAM. To receive the DRE-sanctioned certificate of completion for the course, you must have at least 85% attendance—which means you may not miss more than 3 classes—and you must pass the final exam with a score of 70% or better.
For all exams (including practice exams), you must bring to class two No. 2 pencils with eraser, a 100-question Scantron Form No. 882-E (available for purchase at the SMC Bookstore), and a basic 4-function calculator.
The cost of any books required for a course is included in the course registration fee unless otherwise noted.
