AVIATION

Private Pilot Ground School (Aviation 53)

Learn the basics for beginning pilots. Get familiar with the principles of flight, weather, navigation, engine operation and federal regulations. This course, which prepares you for the FAA exam, is a prerequisite for Instrument and Commercial Pilot Ground Training. CERTIFIED NOTARY PROGRAMS

Notary Public Training Seminar & Exam

Learn how to be a Notary Public and gain legal authority to certify documents, administer oaths, and perform a variety of other functions. In a participatory workshop, find out about the role of the Notary Public, what you can and can’t authorize, the legal and recordkeeping requirements, and what you need to know to pass the California State test for certification. Materials fee $20 at class includes textbook. The Official Notary Public State Exam may be taken on the same day, after the seminar. Registration for the exam is from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., and the exam takes about 45 minutes to complete. If you plan to take the exam, you must present: (1) A check in the amount of $40 (for new applicants and renewals), made payable to the Secretary of State; and (2) a current driver’s license with photo, state-issued ID card, or other appropriate photo ID. You will be notified of exam results approximately two weeks later. PLEASE NOTE: Upon passing the exam, you are required to submit Live Scan fingerprints, which costs $32. Details on Live Scan fingerprinting will be given at the seminar.

CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

BLS (Basic Life Support) for the Healthcare Provider – CPR Recertification

In a 1-day, hands-on seminar, learn CPR skills for use on victims of all ages. Find out how to provide ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen; how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) on adults and children; and how to relieve foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) in both responsive and nonresponsive victims. This course is designed for healthcare providers—including physicians; nurses; paramedics; EMTs; respiratory therapists; physical and occupational therapists; physician assistants; residents, fellows, or medical or nursing students; aides; medical or nursing assistants; and other allied health personnel—who care for patients in a wide variety of settings (both in and out of hospital), have already been certified in BLS-CPR, and wish to renew their certification. A new BLS-CPR card will be issued upon successful completion of the course. Registration is required at least 2 days before course begins. Materials fee $10 at class includes textbook. REAL ESTATE

These courses meet the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) requirements for applicants for California Real Estate License examinations.

Each course consists of 45 hours of classroom instruction plus a final exam. You must complete the course AND take and pass the final exam to receive credit for the course. The final exam is given at the final class meeting, and there will be NO MAKE-UP EXAM. To receive the DRE-sanctioned certificate of completion for the course, you must have at least 85% attendance—which means you may not miss more than 3 class meetings—and you must pass the final exam with a score of 70% or better.

For all exams (including practice exams), you must bring to class two No. 2 pencils with eraser, a 100-question Scantron Form No. 882-E (available for purchase at the SMC Bookstore), and a basic 4-function calculator.

The cost of any books required for a course is included in the course registration fee unless otherwise noted.

Real Estate Principles (1403-93)

This 45-hour course prepares candidates to pass the California Department of Real Estate Licensing Exam to work as a real estate salesperson in California. The course includes two practice exams, as well as the required final exam. Course registration fee includes cost of textbook that will be distributed at first class meeting. For subsequent classes, you are expected to read each required chapter(s) PRIOR to the class meeting, to assist you in understanding the materials presented in class. No class on 2/21, 4/11, and 5/30.

Real Estate Practice (1404-93)

This 45-hour course is a practical study of California real estate law to assist licensees, property owners or managers, and others interested in the practice of real estate. The course fulfills a basic real estate course requirement for a California Real Estate License. Class includes one practice exam, as well as the required final exam. Course registration fee includes cost of textbook that will be distributed at first class meeting. For subsequent classes, you are expected to read each required chapter(s) PRIOR to the class meeting, to assist you in understanding the materials presented in class. You will be responsible for presenting to the class a periodical article regarding a real estate event. You will also be responsible for completing and presenting a class project that will require basic research, solicitation of public information, preparation outside of class meetings, and maintaining a notebook of all documentation for your instructor’s periodic review. Legal Aspects of Real Estate (1406-93)

Prerequisite: Real Estate Principles. Real estate is the most valuable asset most people will ever own, yet many real estate agents receive inadequate training in how to avoid potential legal problems related to its sale and/or purchase. Doing an honest job for clients and staying out of litigation is important! This 45-hour course is designed to provide a basic introduction to contract law and what makes a real estate contract valid. Class also provides an overview of disclosure laws and what real estate agents should and should not reveal; how to handle ethical problems and laws regarding racial discrimination and “steering”; potential problems to be on the watch for; and how to use negotiation as a means to avoid conflict. The course fulfills a basic real estate course requirement for a California Real Estate License, but is also suitable for anyone seeking insight before making a real estate purchase. TAX PREPARATION

Become a Certified Tax Preparer (CTEC #1088)

Be your own boss—or build a handsome second income—as a certified tax preparer. Learn to prepare income tax returns for individuals and small businesses in an easy-to-understand course that awards a certificate of completion necessary for the state certification process. This is a State-approved certificate tax preparer program that requires a student to attend all six classes, as well as pass the final exam, as a qualification for State certification. The program meets the 60-hour qualifying education course requirement of the California Tax Education Council (CTEC) , and is suitable for members of the general public who wish to become certified tax preparers and for certified tax preparers required to complete annual continuing education.
