SCHOLARSHIP BOOKS &  APPLICATION WILL BE AVAILABLE OCTOBER 2007: DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR SMC SCHOLARSHIPS!: THURSDAY,  FEBRUARY 1, 2008

The Santa Monica College Scholarship Program is sponsored by the Santa Monica College Foundation.  The Foundation receives contributions for the Scholarship Program as well as other campus programs.  For further information about making a contribution/s, please contact the Foundation Office at (310) 434-4215. The Scholarship Office can be contacted at (310) 434-4290  located at 1738 Pearl St. 

Approximately 400+ scholarships are awarded at Santa Monica College each year. Criteria includes scholastic achievement, financial need, participation in school activities, community service, honors and organizational affiliations. Additional elements may be reviewed, such as educational objectives of applicants which relate to a particular concentration, field of study, or major, place of residence or project and design portfolios.

Criteria & Basic Requirements:
Some awards require U.S. citizenship but most do not; international students are welcome to apply. 
If  you have not declared a major through the Admissions & Records Office, you are ineligible for awards requiring a specific major.
Undergraduates ONLY!
A
pplicants must be a current SMC student; complete 12 units with a 2.5 GPA. A one page typed essay about personal, and career goals is required at the time of application submission. In addition, students must submit, two (2)  letters of  recommendation . Winners will be selected by various committees. All winners must submit a thank you letter, including Transfer students. SMC Continuing students must provide proof of enrollment. Vocational students must provide proof of program completion. Students must be enrolled 12 units (full-time) at the time of payment, part-time enrollment will be accepted for some majors. Please read Scholarship listings for additional criteria

Government Funding

Federal and state government are the largest sources of financial aid. Start by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can get hard copies from your high school adviser, at your local public library or by calling 1-800-4-FEDAID.

College Savings Plans Network (1-877-CSPN4YOU)
This network serves as a clearinghouse for information among state college savings programs, also known as 529 Plans. Search by state to view residency requirements, tax incentives and other plan details; most plans allow users to enroll online.

Barbara Wiedner and Dorothy Vandercook Memorial Peace Scholarship
Since 1993, Grandmothers for Peace International has awarded $250-$500 scholarships to high school seniors and college freshmen from different countries for their activities relating to peace and social justice, nuclear disarmament and conflict resolution.

Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America
Dollars for Scholars is a network of community-based, volunteer-operated scholarship foundations in cities, towns, and neighborhoods throughout the United States.

Do Something's BRICK Award
Each year, six outstanding leaders age 18 and under are selected to receive a $5,000 scholarship and a $5,000 community grant; three outstanding leaders ages 19-25 receive a $10,000 community grant.

Do Something Grant
Budding community leaders age 18 and under can apply for a $500 grant to implement their ideas to solve community problems.

Education Research Center of America Community Contribution Scholarship
Education Research Center of America awards student scholarships and provides a minimum of 25 scholarships of $1000 per year for higher education. The scholarship awards recognize and reward high school students who have made an extraordinary contribution to their community and/or high school.

The Heart of America Christopher Reeve Award
The award is presented each year to an extraordinary youth who has demonstrated tremendous courage and compassion in serving his or her community. An awards review committee will select one student each year for the award, which includes a $1000 scholarship.

Hitachi Foundation's Yoshiyama Award for Exemplary Service to the Community
The annual award recognizes ten U.S. high school seniors for exemplary service and community involvement.

Kohl’s Kids Who CareŽ  Program
Kohl's Kids Who CareŽ is an annual opportunity for Kohl's to recognize and reward kids who volunteer in their communities.

Presidential Freedom Scholarships
A program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the scholarships are designed to highlight and promote service and citizenship by students and to recognize students for their leadership in those areas.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Association of periOperative Registered Nurses Scholarship
AORN Scholarship Committee has awarded funding for undergraduate and graduate education to AORN members who apply for scholarships and provide funding to nursing students who are enrolled in educational programs leading to initial licensure as registered nurses.

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
Funds basic medical research areas which have direct and immediate relevance to pediatric HIV/AIDS.

Indian Health Service Scholarship Programs
Scholarship programs train professional health personnel to staff Indian Health Service programs serving the Indian people. Both full and part-time student opportunities are available. Eligibility information: Applicant must be an American Indian or Alaska Native.

The National Institutes of Health: Undergraduate Scholarship Program

The Tylenol Scholarship

Open to all high school seniors who would like to submit an original science and math research project. You may enter as an individual if you will be a senior this upcoming school year, or as part of a team of two or three students.
