Using Microsoft FrontPage

Microsoft FrontPage provides a way that faculty and staff can edit pages on SMC web sites for which they have access permissions.

First, try connecting with FrontPage...

  1. Establish your Internet connection in the usual way. If you're on-campus your connection is already on; if you're off-campus you'll need to dialup using your modem. For more information about connecting from home via modem check
  2. Once you're online, launch "FrontPage Explorer" from the Start menu
  3. Click "cancel" on any dialogs that come up and go to "Open FrontPage Webs"
  4. Click "more webs" and type in "homepage.smc.edu" when the text box appears
  5. Click "list webs" and select "homepage root" by clicking the OK button
  6. You will be challenged for your username and password. Enter them as follows:
  7. Username: SMC\LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME (your email address without the "@smc.edu" part)
  8. Password: your password
  9. If all goes well, you should connect to Homepage Root. You'll a see a windows with two frames showing file and folder icons. Double-clicking on a file will open it with the FrontPage Editor, which double-clicking on a folder will display its contents.
  10. If your password is refused, contact webmaster@smc.edu to get access.

Once you're on homepage...

  1. Double-click on the "dept" folder in the right-hand frame of the windows to open it
  2. Open your department folder
  3. Open your personal folder. The folder is named the same as your email account, e.g., lastname_firstname.
  4. Double-click on the "default.htm" page. Your FrontPage editor will load in a separate window.
  5. Try typing in the windows and press "Save" under the File Menu. If this works, you're set up OK.
  6. To link one page to another, highlight the text or image you want to link. Select the small blue globe with a chain on it from the toolbar. If you see the "dept" directory click down until you find your folder again. Once you're in your folder, click once on the page you want to link to. The hyperlink will appear in the lower text field. Click OK to confirm the hyperlink. You'll see the highlighted text colored blue with an underline.
  7. Explore the FrontPage Editor icons. The bottom row of icons have functions almost identical to those used in Microsoft Word.
