Dial-in on a Windows system
Windows 95 Remote Access Setup
The intent of this document is to assist you setup dial-in access to Santa Monica
College. The following are the requirements for this setup.
- A PC Compatible with Windows 95 installed.
- The installation disks or CD for Windows 95.
- A 28800 baud or faster modem (already installed).
- Step 1: Install Dial-Up Networking.
Dial-Up Networking can be found in by left clicking on the Start Button, Move the
cursor up to Programs, then Accessories. If you see the Dial-Up Networking folder Skip to
Step 2. If you do not see the Dial-Up Networking Folder follow these installation
instructions.
- Left Click on the Start Button at the Bottom Left of the Screen.
- Move the Cursor up to Settings then right to Control Panel.
- Left Click on the Control Panel.
- Double Left Click on the Icon Add/Remove Windows Programs.
- Left Click on the tab Windows Setup.
- Double Left Click on Communications.
- Check the box for Dial-Up Networking, by Left Clicking in the Box.
- You will then be prompted to insert your Windows 95 Diskettes or CD.
- After Installation click OK and Close the Control Panel by Clicking on the X in the
upper Right Hand Corner.
II. Step 2: Add TCP/IP Protocol Stack.
- Right Click on Network Neighborhood to bring up Pop-Up Menu.
- Move the Cursor to Properties and Left Click on Properties. (Figure1)
- Left Click on the Add Button.
- Double Left Click Protocol.
- Left Click Microsoft then Double Left Click on TCP/IP.
- Left Click on the Client for Microsoft Network and Left click on Properties.
- Left Click in the box next to Log on to Windows NT domain.
- Enter SMC in the Windows NT domain text box and Left
click on OK.
- Left Click on the Tab called Identification at the top of the window.
- Enter your name in the computer name box, SMC in the Workgroup box and your name again
in the description box.
- Left click on the Tab Configuration.
- Left Click IPX/SPX, Left Click Remove.
- Left Click NETBEUI, Left Click Remove.
- Click OK and Restart your Computer.
- Step 3: Create a Santa Monica College Dial-Up Networking Connection.
- Left Click on the Start Button at the Bottom Left of the Screen.
- Move the Cursor up to Programs then up to Accessories, then Down to Dial-Up Networking,
Left Click on Dial-Up Networking.
- If you see the Dial-Up Networking Group Double Left Click on Make New Connection.
Otherwise Left Click on Next.
- Type in Santa Monica College for the Computer You are Dialing. Left Click Next.
- Enter the Area Code and Phone Number for the Campus. Left Click Next. Left Click Finish.
The remote access number for faculty and staff is
1-310-314-1376.
The remote access number for students is 1-310-396-2482.
- Step 4: Dial-Up Campus.
Your Dial-Up Icon Can always be found by Start;Accessories;Dial-Up Networking.
- Double Left Click on the Santa Monica College Icon.
- Enter your username: Lastname_Firstname.
- Enter your password: This password is the same password you use to access your email.
- Left Click Connect.
Now you are connected to Santa Monica Colleges Dial-Up Access Server. Use your
Browser to access email at http://faculty.smc.edu/exchange
. Remember, You must have ver. 3.0 or greater of Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet
Explorer to Access the Web Version of Santa Monica Colleges Email.
