Q: Someone sent me an email but it is not in my Inbox?
A: Several reasons. It could be that the way you view your Inbox has been changed or it was caught by the spam filter. On the toolbar in your Inbox, go to View>Current View>Messages. Make sure there is a check mark next to Messages. It will display everything. If you do not see it there go to http://spam.smc.edu and see if the spam filter caught it. If it did you need to Allow the email address to come back to the Inbox. Read the file on it: Spam Filter

Here is a link to the PDF that explains how to do it: Creating Personal Folders. If you still want to try you can contact accountservices@smc.edu.
Word 2007
Q:
Why does the large Word document that I created in
Office 2003 display improperly in Office 2007?
A: According to Microsoft, Word will only support a document up to 32 MB in size. They have successfully tested documents up to 65 MB in size but stability is not guaranteed in any document larger than 32 MB. For larger documents, you can separate them by chapter or headings and save them as individual documents then merge them when you print. Alternatively, you can choose a desktop publishing application like Microsoft Publisher.

A: Select the View tab in the Ribbon and in the “Show/Hide Group,” check the Ruler to display rulers on your document.

General Office 2007
Q: Why does Office 2007 look so different from previous
versions of Office?
A: An example is that of Word. When Word first started out it was DOS (no graphics) based and it had 500 features and text explanations was the only way. Now it is Windows based and it has 1500 features and Microsoft felt it was better to thumbnail (to make it more graphic) so you don't have to figure out the text meaning for a feature. It uses what is called a Ribbon that is a main set of commands so you can click to execute tasks.

Getting Started With Office 2007
Q: Why can’t my coworker, who is on Office 2003, read a document I sent?
A: Office 2007 uses a new file format that is not backwards compatible with previous versions. There are 2 ways to fix this issue:
You can choose “Save As” and select "Office 97-2003 version" when you save your document. Or, your coworker can install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack that will enable a computer with Office 2003 installed to open and work with files created in Office 2007. All campus Windows computers should have this program already installed. If not then call or email Telecom to have this installed.
Additional Questions
Q: Why can’t I read PDF documents using Acrobat
Professional 7.0?
A: You will need to update your current version of Adobe Acrobat to Acrobat Professional 9.0 Contact your local desktop support to install the most current version of Adobe Acrobat Professional.
Q: Why can't I print a hard copy of the SMC phone extensions from the website?
A: It is not designed to be printed. If you try, it will be about 100 pages. You need to go to the Telecom website and click on Printable Campus Directory to print the PDF file. It also has phone numbers for the different departments as well.
Q: Why isn't Windows Vista installed on computers?
A: Several reasons. Most of the computers we have will run very slow with Windows Vista. It needs newer computers with more memory. Also programs we currently use with Windows XP will not run on Vista. Web ISIS is one of them. Also, there are a lot of problems with Vista just running it.
Q: Will be able to install Windows 7
A: No. Windows 7 is a new operating system. We need to test it before adding it and see how compatible it is to our campus computer system. Like Vista, it will run better on newer computers. It will not run Windows XP software. It would require the school to buy new software and the campus cannot afford to do that at this time. Manufactures do not have software geared to Windows 7 yet.
Q: My password doesn't work when I try to log on to the computer!
A: Your password may have expired or you may have forgot it and it needs to be reset. A password is good for a one year and needs to be reset. Sometimes people also forget their passwords. You need to go to www.smc.edu/password/reset. Read it carefully because it explains the procedure for resetting your password. Another way to do it is go hit the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys and a screen that will pop up so you can change your password before you get the message from Account Services. Remember that it may not always accept the first new password you come up with. Any new password the system accepts takes about 15 minutes to properly use.
