Masks in Balinese Dance Theater
Nyoman Wenten

Mr Wenten is one of Bali’s most accomplished and versatile dancers and musicians, celebrated as both a teacher and performer. Wenten is known for his work in traditional Indonesian music and dance, but also for his creative east-west fusion of composition and performance work.

He is a traditionally trained Balinese musician, actor and dancer. His earliest studies were with his late grandfather Mangku Dalang Sading, who was a master puppeteer, dancer, musician and educator. Wenten complemented this traditional training with formal study, graduating from Bali Conservatory of Music and Dance in Denpasar, Bali, then from National Dance and Music Academy in Jogyakarta, Java. He also holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cal Arts and a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA.

He has toured throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America, presenting lecture demonstrations, workshops, and performances.

With funding from James Irvine Foundation in 1999-2000 and 2001-02 Nyoman Wenten and Linda Sohl-Ellison produced a unique and ambitious collaborative project; an in-depth work of tap, Balinese gamelan music and Balinese inspired movement. The result was a 40-minute, four section work called Nusantara (Bridge Between Islands), which garnered prestigious Lester Horton Dance Awards.

In 2003 he performed in Hong Kong in collaboration with the Beijing Opera in an adaptation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Most recently he has collaborated with playwright William Miranda from Canada. They produced a music, dance and theater piece based on the Greek story Oedipus, involving 75 artists; musicians, dancers and actors. This work was performed successfully at Bali Arts Festival 2006.
