This is not a articulation agreement.  It is a tool to aid students in knowing which courses Biola University will accept from this school to fulfill General Education requirements.

NOTE: All credit from community colleges is lower division.

GENERAL EDUCATION OPTIONS FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS AT BIOLA UNIVERSITY

Transfer students may complete their general education through Biola University's General Education Curriculum or, prior to enrolling at Biola, through the lntersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC).

The IGETC model for the California State University (CSU) system or University of California (UC) is accepted by Biola University with the following provisions:

  • The current foreign language requirement for all bachelor degrees cannot be completed by the IGETC certification.
  • The minimum of 130 units for graduation will remain the same.  (A minimum of 120 units in the adult degree completion program will remain the same).
  • In addition to the IGETC, all prerequisites and support courses for existing majors must be met.
  • Transfer students following the IGETC must complete it before they enroll at Biola University.  Students who do not complete it before they enroll will follow the Biola General Education curriculum.

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Behavioral Science (3 units) - Choose from: Anthropology 2; Psychology 1; Sociology 1, 2

Communications (3 units) - May not be taken by distance education without approval from Comm. Dept.: Choose from: Speech 1, 4, 6, 11

English (6 units) - May not be taken by distance education: English 1, 2

Fine Arts (3 units) - Art 1 or 2 or 3 or 8; Music 30 or 31 or 32; Theatre Arts 5

Foreign Language (4-12 units*) - Foreign Language requirement varies according to degree program and years of high school foreign language completed.  (See catalog for specific information):  French 1, 2, 3 or German 1, 2, 3 or Spanish 1, 2, 3

History (6 units**) - Most students need 3 units in U.S. History or Government AND 3 units in World Civ. Credential students, please see Educational Department for advisement).  Choose one from: History 11 or 12; Political Science 1; choose one from: History 33 or 34

Literature (3 units) - English 3 or 4, 7 or 8

Philosophy (3 units) - Philosophy 1, 2, 3, 4, 7

Physical Education - Only one unit of recreation skill and one dance class may be used as P.O. credit.  First Aid & CPR do not count as P.E. activity credit.  Any 4 different P.E. skills/activities; may be repeated once if taken in a progressive level.

Science/Math (8 units total required.  Minimum of 3 semester units in Math & 3 semester units in Science) - Anthropology 1, 5; Astronomy 1A, 1B, 3, 4; Biology 2, 3, 9, 15, 15N; Botany 1; Chemistry 9, 11, 12, 21, 22, 24, 31; Geography 5; Geology 1, 4, 31; Math 2, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 21, 22, 23, 52; Nutrition 1; Physics 6, 7, 8, 9, 14; Zoology 5

*Foreign language requirement varies according to degree program and years of high school foreign language completed.  Se catalog for specific information.

**The History requirement is 6 units. A minimum of 3 semester units in each area: 
U.S. History/Government and World Civilizations-is required.

***8 units total required.  Students must have 3 semester units in math and 3 units in science, with 2 additional units in either subject.  Requirement varies by majors.

BIOLA UNIVERSITY TRANSFER POLICY

1.  Credit will be accepted only from institutions accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency with similar accreditation academic programs i.e., WASC and AABC.

2.  Students from unaccredited institutions may request a copy from the Registrar's Office of Biola's policy on validating unaccredited coursework if the school is recognized by their state as an academic institution.  The validation process must be completed during the fist semester of enrollment.

3.  Biola University measures all courses in semester units of credit.  Quarter units are converted to semester units by reducing the quarter units by one-third.  Such a reduction does not mean loss of credit.

4.  A maximum of 70 semester units are acceptable from two-year community colleges.

Transfer students may fulfill their general education requirements by completing Biola University's General Education Curriculum or, prior to enrolling at Biola, completing the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC). 

The IGETC model for the California State University (CSU) system or University of California (UC) is accepted by Biola University with the following provisions:

  • The current foreign language requirement for all bachelors degrees will be retained. 
  • The minimum of 130 units for graduation will stay the same.
  • In addition to the IGETC, all prerequisites and support courses for existing majors must be met.
  • Transfer students following the IGETC must complete it before they enroll at Biola University.  Students who do not complete the IGETC before they enroll will follow the Biola General Education curriculum.

5.  Biola University will accept credit for equivalent courses from schools accredited by regional or national agencies recognized by CHEA (Council for Higher Education Administration), including courses by distance education.

6.  All students are required to take a minimum of 24 units of upper division in their major, 15 of which must be taken at Biola University.

7.  Biola has a residency requirement for for biblical studies. Of the 30 units of Bible required of all students, 15 units must be taken at Biola.

8.  Grades do not transfer-only units of credit.  A student's grade-point average is computed for graduation purposes only on work completed at Biola University.

9.  Courses may not transfer for several reasons: repeat of work already taken, low grades (C-" or lower), technical or vocational courses, remedial courses, etc.

10.  A non-music major is limited to a maximum of eight units of credit in applied music (including ensembles), and a non-physical education major is limited to eight units of credit in physical education or skill courses.

11.  Check the number of units listed under "Total Transferred Units" on the front of this sheet to secure your classification, as follows:

Freshman     0-26 units
Sophomore   27-56 units
Junior           57-87 units
Senior          88 units and above
