The tutors come from an array of experiences.  Some are students from SMC or a local university.  Others are SMC staff and faculty or  specialists in the subject they tutor.

Students from any discipline may use the writing tutoring services. It may be helpful to know what the tutors can do to assist you.

Tutors can:

  • Help you to brainstorm topics, to organize your thoughts and to make outlines.
  • Model techniques for probing and developing topics.
  • Give you feedback on your analysis of your ideas.
  • Guide you to write effective thesis statements, introductions and conclusions.
  • Help you develop skills for analyzing literature.
  • Explain rules and concepts from your text or lecture notes.
  • Help you understand assignments made by instructors.
  • Address your specific grammar questions that you circled in your paper before the beginning of your tutoring session.
  • Work with you on grammar lessons in your textbooks.

Tutors cannot:
  • Proofread your paper for you.
  • Tell you what to say in your writing.
These provisos apply:
  • Appointments must be made in person.
  • Students must be working on an assignment from a class taught at Santa Monica College.
