CLUB ROW – March 27th 2003
Laurence Fondouop
As
an international student, I always look forward to discovering
cultures different than mine and to meeting people from
other parts of the world. It helps me enrich my general
knowledge and share my experiences related to culture
shock or even language barrier; thereby easing my integration
in America, especially at Santa Monica College.
Ever
since my arrival at Santa Monica College (Fall semester
2002) I have attended two club rows and each was as
exciting and fun as the other. What amazes me the most
is the energy involved and embodied in club row activities:
some students organize games and choreographies while
others try to call people’s attention on the delicious
traditional meals they have prepared. Another aspect
that caught my attention was the professors’ participation.
I saw many instructors encouraging their students while
others were simply enjoying themselves.
Moreover,
the club row this semester was to me some sort of recess:
after all the issues associated with war in Iraq, student’s
demonstrations related to the budget cuts in California
institutions and stress related to studies, the club
row acted as a break. Unfortunately it lasted for just
about two hours and many students had to resume classes
immediately after it was over. This may be the only
thing I do not enjoy about the club rows in school ?
they are too short!
However, in a school such as Santa
Monica College that contains thousands of foreign students
and staff members, I think the club row is very enriching
and helpful for accommodation to the new academic system,
and in forging new relationships.
