Becoming
a Strong Woman
I always knew that a woman
needed to be "strong", but my interpretation
of "strong" was distorted. My first impression
of a strong woman was my mother, Uyen Pham, a Vietnamese
immigrant whose life and circumstances determined
how she would live and relate to others. Read

Crash and Burn
Growing up, my stepfather was my hero in every way.
I wanted to do everything he did. He was my Batman
and I was his Robin; we were "Partners in crime,"
my mother would say. We had a bond closer than blood.
We had an everlasting bond of love and drugs. Read

Living Hell
When I awoke this Easter
morning, I knew I wouldn't be at Easter dinner.
I couldn't pretend today. You weren't here to tell
me how selfish I was. Yet somehow I felt it on my

The Path of the EveryDay
Heroine
The path of the everyday
heroine is the path that every woman born walks
- at one time of her life or another. It is the

glory of womanhood and the yoke of servitude. It
is the path of the savior and the path of the victim.
The giver and the taker; the do-er and the done-to.

Pussy This, Pussy That
"You're such a pussy."
I was a youngster at a municipal swimming pool when
I heard one boy say this to another because he would
not jump off the high dive. As soon as I heard it,
I knew it was a "bad word". Although I
didn't have a slang dictionary around, I knew it
meant that the kid being called a pussy was a scared
coward. It makes me wonder, how did the use of this
word come about? Which came first, the vagina, the
cat or the coward definition? And how are a vagina,
a cat and a coward even related? How do we, as women,
take the word back and redefine it to mean something
strong? Read
