Communication and media studies is an extremely versatile field with many career applications. Courses combine theory and practice, encouraging students to apply classroom concepts to real-world contexts. This far-reaching program prepares you for entry-level roles, including marketing manager, editor, copywriter, advertising and promotions coordinator, PR specialist, market research analyst, reporter, correspondent, and more.
From the outset, our program addresses communication theory while helping you build strong oral communication skills. Study the dynamics, nuances, and cultural differences in communication between individuals in society, as well as among various groups. Understand global communication trends and how they impact consumer purchase decisions. You will also present your ideas and arguments in a variety of contexts, in preparation for personal presentations, upper-division coursework, and workplace settings.

Students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university need to know which courses completed at Santa Monica College will be accepted at the specific college/university. Students pursuing the Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer will demonstrate, through written and oral academic work, knowledge of communication principles, concepts, and theories, and be prepared to pursue further study In communication studies or a similar major at the baccalaureate level at the California State University.
