Everything you need to know about Professional Development Day

Fall Professional Day 2021 (Thursday, August 26, 2021)

The SMC Professional Development Committee (PDC) and the Classified Professional Development Committee (CPDC) organized the Fall Professional Development Day 2021 program.

Last Spring the focus of the Flex Day was to raise awareness of the Santa Monica College Student Equity plan.  For Fall Professional Development Day the goal is to not just plan and think about equity but to start taking action. The day will focus on learning specific actionable steps to promote equity across SMC.

The theme of the Fall Professional Development Day isThis is How We Do It!: Equity in Action.  To help achieve this goal, the PDC and CPDC have worked together with other key campus stakeholders to develop a virtual program featuring keynote addresses and participatory workshops.

Beginning with a morning welcome session including a Presidential Address with Dr. Kathryn Jeffery and Academic Senate President, Jamar London, as well as Dr. Maria Muñoz, Interim Dean of Equity, Pathways and Inclusion.

As part of the Equity in Action theme, we are very excited to be kicking off the Equitizing Gateway Courses program. Equitizing Gateway Courses (EGC) is a multi-semester, multi-dimensional professional development opportunity created by faculty for faculty specifically to cultivate and deepen equity-centered pedagogical practices and to better serve today’s students, particularly our African American and Latinx students. Part of the SMC Redesign, through EGC, faculty will develop and implement the changes needed in our teaching practices, our classrooms, and our curriculum.

Following the morning session:

  • First a short session for all faculty on the Equitizing Gateway Courses initiative.
  • Following that short session, there will be two parallel tracks from 12:30-1:55. Note, for people who are in the EGC track, you will have a chance to meet Dr. Lane at another EGC event later in the semester and the session will be recorded.
    • Parallel track 1: Equity Gateway Courses (EGC) - One session from 12:30-1:55 pm
    • Parallel track 2: General Track (non-EGC) - One session from 12:30-12:55 pm, several sessions to choose from 1:00-1:55 pm.
  • Later in the afternoon all faculty will have additional workshops available, including topics on technology and self-care.

We hope you enjoy the selection of professional development that we have organized. All workshops are virtual. Please review the schedule to make your selection. Full captioned recordings will be posted as soon as available following the event (likely two weeks). We ask that you attend 6 hours total (full-time faculty requirement) and document your participation as you typically do (more specific information is in the FAQ list below.).
