Usernames are assigned by an SMC computer program.
The Username usually looks like lastname_firstname_middlename , but:
- name parts might be abbreviated
- numbers might be added
- the middle name might not be included
Each part is glued together with the other parts by an underscore character that looks like “_” (sometimes called an “underline”). The underscore character is on the same keyboard key as the dash. But, you have to hold down the keyboard’s Shift key and then press the hyphen (or dash) key in order to get the underscore.
You cannot choose your own Username. Usernames cannot be changed, unless you change your legal name on file with the Office of Admissions and Records.
Usernames have a maximum length. There are rules set for them by computer companies that SMC works with. The computer program adjusts for students who have the same name.
