Parking Citations

The Santa Monica College Police Department, receives its authority to enforce traffic and parking regulations from the California Penal Code, the California Vehicle Code, and provisions established by the Santa Monica College District Board of Trustees. The Santa Monica Community College District Police and Safety Services Department operates under the rules and regulations of the Santa Monica Municipal Code Sections contained in Article III, Public Safety, Chapter 3, Traffic Regulations.

The following regulations are enforced on the Santa Monica College campus pursuant to sections of the California Vehicle Code:

  • Red Zone

  • Out Of Space

  • No Permit Displayed

  • Head In Only

  • Fire Lane or Zone

  • Posted Sign

  • Traffic Hazards

  • Driveway

  • Handicap Space

  • Double Parking

  • Expired registration tab (or none displayed)

This list does not prohibit officers from issuing citations for other vehicle code section violations not listed above.

Parking Citation Appeals

In accordance with California Vehicle Code section 40215, any person who feels a citation was issued in error may contest the parking citation by filing an appeal.

Four Ways to Appeal

  1. Call the Santa Monica College Police Station at 310-434-4608

  2. Mail the appeal to Santa Monica College Police Department - 1718 Pearl Street, Santa Monica College Ca 90405

  3. Appeal in person at Santa Monica College Police Department

  4. Appeal online: Click on the Pay Notices Tab and enter your vehicle license plate number or your Notice Number and provide the prompted information, described below. 

Appeals Process

You are allowed 21 days to appeal your notice.

In each of the appeal options you must provide an explanation of why you wish to appeal this notice with all the relevant facts and circumstances.

The adjudicating authority will respond to an appeal via email. It is your responsibility to check the e-mail account that you have indicated for response(s) to your appeal. Non-compliance with the decision(s) of the adjudicating authority with regard to this appeal may result in additional fines, forfeiture of parking privileges, and/or impoundment of your vehicle(s). You are required to provide first name, last name and at least one contact method -- either email, phone, or address.

By using the online iParq dispute resolution service, you agree to electronic delivery only of your dispute results, and understand your dispute results will not be mailed to you. An email notification will be sent to the email address you provided at registration for notification of when your dispute results are available to view in the online Dispute Center. If you wish to have your dispute results mailed to you, you must contact us to submit a dispute by phone or mail. Furthermore, per California law, disregarding the citation will result in a "hold" being placed on the vehicle registration with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Vehicle registration will be contingent upon compliance.
