Parking Permits

Types of Permits

All vehicles parking on any Santa Monica College property must have a valid Santa Monica College parking permit unless parked in metered spaces. Personal notes left on vehicles describing reasons for parking on the campus without the proper parking permit or for parking in an unauthorized manner do not constitute permission to park; these vehicles will be cited accordingly.

All parking permits are issued solely by the authority of the SMC Police Department and are not transferable to other persons.

There is no guarantee of a parking space on campus for employees and students. All parking is subject to appropriate availability.

Student Permits

Student permits are valid in all general student parking lots. The student parking permit does not guarantee the permit holder a parking space in a specific lot.

Employee Permits

Employee permits are valid in all staff parking lots as well as student lots.

Vendor Permit

Off-campus vendors and service providers who park on the Santa Monica College campus and perform maintenance and repair services for campus departments must procure a visitor-parking permit.

These permits are valid in designated staff and student parking lots. If this is not pre-arranged prior to arrival, you must obtain a permit at the parking kiosk located at 19th Street and Pico Boulevard, next to the Student Services Center.

Vehicles with commercial license plates may park free in designated loading zones for the purpose of loading and unloading only.

Daily Permit

Students and visitors may purchase daily permits for $10 from the parking kiosk located at 19th Street and Pico Boulevard. This will be in the turnaround located at the Student Services Center.

Other Types of Parking

Conference and Special Event Parking

Upon request, the Santa Monica College Police Department will make special parking permits and/or arrangements for conferences, institutes, short courses, and athletic or other special events.

Those organizing functions can arrange for parking through Events Office at 310-434-4000.

Visitors who attend events which are not regularly scheduled, but are campus-sponsored, will still need to purchase a daily parking permit for $10.00.

Parking for Contractors and Consultants

Unless otherwise specified by contract, contractors doing work within the campus must arrange for parking in advance. Consultants not on the college payroll, but doing work for campus departments may be issued parking permits.

Permit Displays

Permits are now automated and are tied to your license plate and or temporary plate or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). You obtain a permit in advance

Lost or Stolen Plates

Since your permit is tied to your license plate, should your license plate becomes lost or stolen, please immediately report this to Campus Police. Register your VIN in place of the permit until you receive a replacement.

Disciplinary and Criminal Actions

SMC Police may notify the Dean of Judicial Affairs, or the appropriate administrator so that further disciplinary action may be taken when appropriate. Misuse of the parking permit system may constitute theft of services in violation of 484 of the California Penal Code. SMC PD also reserves the right to file criminal charges if appropriate.

Santa Monica College Police Department

The SMC Police and Safety Services Department operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The primary responsibility of the department is to provide for the safety and protection of the students, employees, and visitors on district premises, as well as the protection of district property.
