Josh is a fourth-year SMC student that has completed 9 Associates Degrees mostly within the People and Society Area of Interest (see degrees below). Since being at the college in 2017, Josh has been involved in many areas of student leadership at SMC starting with developing Guided Pathways (Areas of Interests), AB705 Implementation (changes to math and english requirements), SMC Connectors, committees, Student Trustee during the 2020-2021 school year and now your President! Josh is also a participant in Guardian Scholars, Adelante, and DSPS.
On a statewide level, Josh has participated in leadership through several partnerships and committees with the Chancellors Office, being the sole statewide Student Member of the California Community College Trustee Board 2020-2021 and is currently 1 of 2 Board of Governor, Student Members appointed by Governor Newsom to spearhead the CCC systems colleges and will be in the position until June 2023.
In continuing his education, Josh is also a student at Pepperdine University starting in the Fall 2021 Semester studying a double major, International Studies: Global Politics and History with a minor in Social Work. Despite transferring to a 4-year institution, Josh states "I am more committed to SMC, now than ever before. This college has given so much to me by helping myself rediscover my passion for learning and putting me on a path to obtain a college education while also growing my person. I can only hope to give back what has been given to me, and to provide the spaces that guide future students on their journeys to success. Proud to be SMC!"
Fun Facts: Josh is an active entertainment professional and social change advocate. In 2019 he was a trophy presenter at the 71st Primetime Emmy's and started his non-profit, The Foster Bunch, in 2017 to use the media platform to transform the foster care system. Josh is also an appointed commissioner for the LA County Board of Supervisors. He is originally from the metro-Detroit, Michigan.
