I started at SMC with almost no knowledge of the U.S. education system. As a new immigrant, there was so much to figure out, and college life was just one part of it. I didn’t know where to start, and many of my first conversations began with, “I have no idea how to do this—can you help me?” But I always found someone willing to guide me. SMC became one of the first places where I truly felt at home after immigrating. It gave me the confidence, community, and support I didn’t even know I needed.
SMC didn’t just prepare me academically—it gave me the courage to dream bigger. My professors and counselors believed in me even before I believed in myself. I think Sheridan mentioned private universities three or four times before I even seriously considered applying to one. Their encouragement helped me set goals I never thought were possible.
SMC gave me the space to figure things out. I started with many questions and little direction, but I found people who listened, helped, and pushed me when I needed it. It’s where I learned how to advocate for myself, ask better questions, and keep moving forward—even when I had no idea what was next.
I’d like to thank all my professors who challenged me, supported me, and believed in me—especially Dr. Anderson, Dr. Andersen, Dr. Baker, Dr. Dong, Dr. Nauli, Dr. Rajski, Dr. Richardson, Dr. Bene, and Professor Phung. A huge thank you to my counselors, Sheridan, Paulette, and Joan, for helping me shape my academic journey, and to STEM, Science LRC, and Transfer. To my campus supervisors Paulo, Judith, and Toni, thank you for the opportunities to grow. And to all my friends, thank you for your support and for making this journey joyful. You made it lighter, brighter, and so much more meaningful.
