About Associate Degrees
All Associate degrees offered at Santa Monica College are designed to provide students with the necessary skills to compete successfully in related job markets. Completion of an Associate degree usually will not adequately satisfy transfer major requirements. Students are encouraged to meet with a counselor to develop an academic program best suited for their transfer institution and intended major.

Associate in Arts (AA)
The Associate in Arts degree (AA) is a general studies degree. It can stand alone, giving you the skills to enter the workforce. Or, it can be the first steps towards earning a bachelor degree at a four-year university.

An Associate in Science (AS) Degree prepares you with the unique skills needed to enter a specialized career field. You may also choose to continue your studies and earn a Bachelor degree in a science-related field.

Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT)
Earning an AA-T or AS-T degree at SMC guarantees you admission to many four-year universities with junior standing and prepares you to complete a bachelor degree in a similar major at a CSU or a participating UC, HBCU or private university.
