The Flight of the Danger Noodle

SMC photo alumni and interdisciplinary artist David Roy will be exhibiting a new series of works at the Barrett Gallery this spring. He will be exhibiting self-portraits made by triggering toll evasion cameras on California highways. Roy is also building three rockets for the show and plans to fly them this summer at LDRS 40. Two All of the rockets are designed to carry cameras. Also on display will be a series of oil paintings based on his current and future rocket designs. The new series rockets named "Danger Noodle" are the namesake of the show. David is the founder of an organization called CMBDLOBTB whose mission is -"To conduct rocket science, both technical and social and to promote the Seven Noble Ideals of Human Space Exploration: Creativity, Challenge, Courage, Ingenuity, Perseverance, Unity, and Discovery." David will be hosting a synthesizer building workshop for the college on April 12th and will debut a new experimental musical work using the synths built with SMC students. He will be giving a talk about starting his art career as a photographer using the skills learned at SMC, potential collaboration between artists and engineers, and how he transitioned from photography to sculpture and interdisciplinary art. David Roy studied photography at SMC before transferring to Otis College of Art and Design. He received an MFA in sculpture from Yale University in 2020 and now returns to SMC to share his story with our students. “Attending SMC was such an important experience in my life and I am happy to share whatever I can.” -David Roy
