I entered SMC unsure of what I wanted to do or who I wanted to be. I initially pursued art and film, and even completed multiple associate's degrees in those areas, because I thought that was my path. But through exploring different classes, I discovered a passion for science, especially marine biology. SMC helped me realize that I wanted to dedicate my life to studying and protecting ocean life.

Thanks to SMC, I had the opportunity and privilege to transfer to the #1 public university in the world, UC Berkeley. The support and resources I received at SMC gave me the confidence to pursue a career in science.

SMC helped me find my path by offering the right classes and guidance. The counselors and professors encouraged me to explore my interests, which led me to choose my future career path.

I want to thank all my professors, tutors, counselors, classmates, and friends who supported me throughout my time at SMC. Most importantly, I’m especially grateful to my family, who have worked so hard and stood by me every step of the way. I truly couldn’t have done it without them.

My advice to future SMC students is that it’s okay to make mistakes. It’s okay to choose the wrong major, get an unexpected grade, dislike a class, or change your path entirely. College is a place to learn, not just academically, but about yourself. There’s room to grow, explore, and figure things out along the way.
