My journey to SMC was unexpected. As someone whose parents didn't attend college, I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. When I applied to schools, the costs were exceedingly high for what we could afford and rather than waste my time, I turned to a path that I was biased about, community college. It was a quick move, and I lived on my own that same summer I graduated. The years I spent at SMC were filled with so many cool events, people, classes, and it really helped me thrive and push through hardships. I also learned how to discipline myself and commit to my goals.
SMC influenced my life and career through its counselors and educators. Whenever I had a question about my academic life, my future, or even a personal concern, there was always a counselor or mentor I could talk to. Building those relationships from year 1 really helped me push through and surpass any mental struggles I was facing at times. SMC also had many events where I got to learn more about how transferring worked and what schools were out there. One of these events/workshops was how I applied to a school that changed the trajectory of my future.
SMC helped prepare me for what's to come when I transfer. The educators at this school are some of the best people I've ever had as teachers and they really prepare you for higher level work, industry standards, and simply motivate you. SMC helped me build a portfolio from the ground up, polish it, and use it for my transfer applications. It got me scholarships into a school I thought was not an option for me, and I am extremely grateful for that.
Shoutout to Sherece Jefferson and Amanda Garcia for being awesome counselors since I started SMC and helping me with my journey.
To current or future SMC students: Follow your gut and trust yourself!
