Something you loved about being part of the STEM Program, perhaps a specific memorable experience OR a short reflection of how you've grown since the program?
I loved the STEM Lab, it was one of the main places I studied on campus. The tutors Jes and Saher helped me succeed in math when I really needed help, especially with Calculus II and Trigonometry. The STEM Lab also had white board desks which is a tool I learned that I loved then, and still use to this day when studying for classes such as Ochem or Physics.

A resource or support program that help you in your transition from the community college to your transfer university:
One resource was CCCP (Center for Community College Partnerships). I was in a cohort of other community college students with a similar goal to transfer, and found CCCP as a program that helped me in my transition. CCCP took me on my first tour of UCLA, and after touring campus, sitting in on lectures, and getting to hear from other UCLA students’ experiences motivated me to transfer there. I saw it as a good fit for me as someone interested in the medical field.

For those who have graduated, what is it like to now work as a _____ in your field? and/or what do you love about being a ____ (engineer, chemist, data scientist, computer scientist etc.,)?
I’ve been working as a scribe in my gap years, and it’s been an amazing experience. I’ve learned so much about the healthcare system, understanding subspecialists more, and working on charting/documentation which will be incredibly helpful for the future.

Any advice to an aspiring _____ (engineer, chemist, data scientist, computer scientist etc.,):
I would say to the aspiring doctor….take things at your own pace, do what you feel you connect to the most, and genuinely think about your long-term happiness on this path. I would encourage one to balance STEM courses with others, to ensure you can really put your energy and focus into learning. Others thrive around you when you thrive yourself, and that means caring for yourself to start.

Any STEM Shortcuts/hacks you can share?
I think asking Chat GPT for summaries/outlines can be helpful. Having my own whiteboard has made a world of difference when studying for classes like physics. I also would recommend getting an IPad if you can; digital notes that I took in the latter part of college saved me a lot of time and increased my efficiency.

If you had to give advice to yourself when you first started at SMC, what would you say?
I would say to enjoy it, because it went by so much faster than I thought.

Outside of STEM and related activities, what do you enjoy doing?
I love playing basketball, swimming in the ocean, and coaching kids in youth sports. I’m a big fan of hikes and exploring. I’ve also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
