After graduating high school, I made the intentional decision to attend Santa Monica College rather than go straight to a four-year university. I wanted to gain more hands-on experience in my chosen fields—Theater Arts and Graphic Design—while also developing strong professional skills. Pursuing both majors has always been a dream of mine, and SMC offered the perfect environment to begin that journey.
I began my studies at SMC in Fall 2021, during the height of the pandemic. Despite the challenges, I stayed focused and committed. By Fall 2022, I became a student ambassador for the Welcome Center, where I supported incoming students and helped build community on campus. The following year, in Fall 2023, I was honored to join the Associated Students (A.S.) team as the Primary Commissioner for the ICC Vice Chair.
In Fall 2024, I ran in the special elections and was elected as the Student Trustee for the 2024–2025 academic year—a role that allowed me to represent the student body and collaborate with campus leadership. This experience was a major milestone in my journey at SMC.
With the support of my A.S. advisor, Benny, our Associate Dean of Student Life, Thomas, and the dedicated counselors at SMC, I was able to complete my remaining classes during the spring and summer semesters. Thanks to their guidance and encouragement, I successfully completed my time at SMC and am now transferring to California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), where I will pursue a B.A. in Theater Arts and a minor in Graphic Design.
SMC has had a major influence on both my life and career by preparing me for the real world and helping me grow in areas I’m truly passionate about. Through my time here, I gained valuable knowledge in my fields of interest, while also developing strong leadership and professional skills. One of the most meaningful experiences was being part of my first public performance during the Spring semester in my Musical Theater Workshop class, led by Professor Terrin Adair. That opportunity not only boosted my confidence as a performer, but also reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in the arts.
SMC helped me where I want to be by providing me great academic support and resources as well as leadership opportunities.
I want to extend my sincere thanks to all the incredible SMC counselors who supported me throughout my journey at Santa Monica College. Your guidance made a lasting impact on both my academic and personal growth. I’m also deeply grateful to the Welcome Center and the Office of Student Life for giving me the opportunity to learn more about the campus, while also gaining valuable professional experience and leadership skills.
A special shoutout goes to my amazing supervisors, Allison, Daniella, and Maria, for offering me my first student job opportunity at the Counseling Department. I’m truly thankful for your trust, mentorship, and encouragement.
Last but not least, I want to give a heartfelt thank you to my A.S. Advisor Benny Blaydes and Associate Dean of Student Life, Thomas Bui. Over the past two years, your constant support, advice, and motivation helped me stay focused and dedicated to my goals. Without your encouragement, I wouldn’t have been able to successfully complete my journey at SMC and transfer to the next chapter of my academic career.
Hard work pays off take advantage of the opportunity’s provided by SMC and definitely get involved in campus building connections and networking helps out a lot also don’t be afraid to ask for help support is always appreciated to reach your academic goals and success.
