Santa Monica College was the first real community I connected with after stepping into a completely new chapter of my life. As an international student, moving to a new country meant facing a world where everything felt unfamiliar, and at first, I wasn’t sure where I belonged. However, SMC changed that. It was the first place that offered me a genuine sense of openness and possibility. The welcoming environment and diverse community made starting over feel far less overwhelming. Even while navigating the challenges of a new educational system, being surrounded by such a driven and supportive community constantly pushed me to grow. Over time, SMC became much more than just a steppingstone; it was where I found my footing, built my true confidence, and began shaping the future I always envisioned for myself.
At SMC, I quickly realized that my ambition was matched by the institution itself; the entire system reflected a deep commitment to student success. From academic counselors to professors, consistent support and structured guidance ensured that every step I took was forward-moving and purposeful. The campus environment was particularly impactful. Being surrounded by driven students and meaningful opportunities created a unique culture where challenge and encouragement at the same time. Being part of SMC allowed me to maintain my focus, push past my boundaries, and move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
SMC provided the exact foundation I needed through rigorous coursework, dedicated professors, and invaluable resources that kept me on track. The environment constantly challenged me to maintain consistency and discipline. While the journey wasn’t always easy, that rigor is precisely what prepared me for the next step. SMC didn’t just help me transfer; it shaped me into someone who is truly ready for greater challenges.
I am deeply grateful to the professors who challenged me, supported me, and truly believed in my potential—Dr. Anderson, Dr. Baker, Dr. Cavassani, Dr. Hsieh, Dr. Richardson, Dr. Rojas, Dr. Salter, and Dr. Vagin. I also want to thank my counselor, Sheridan, for her invaluable guidance in shaping my academic path, as well as the STEM program, Science LRC, and the Transfer Center for creating such a strong support system throughout my journey. Special thanks go to my campus supervisor at the Tutoring Center, Paulo Taboada, for his trust and for providing me with the opportunity to grow both academically and professionally. And finally, to my family and friends—thank you for your constant support and for making this journey so meaningful. You made it lighter, brighter, and truly unforgettable.
To current/future SMC students: Never underestimate what you are capable of. It is easy to feel lost or behind at first, but consistency beats everything. Stay focused, be patient, and never compare your path to others. Nothing you aim for is beyond your reach, you are far more capable than you realize. Keep pushing forward, and you will get there.
