I came to the U.S. from Egypt with no degrees and very basic English. I started with just six units at SMC, hoping to qualify for a grant. What I found was more than just a college — I found support, guidance, and people who believed in me.

As a mother of four and a full-time daycare provider, it wasn’t easy. I studied late at night, while my boys studied for college too. There were many challenges, but I kept chasing my dream — the dream of wearing that graduation gown and walking proudly across the stage at SMC.

That dream came true. Graduation day was one of the most special moments of my life. I proved to myself and to my children that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.

When I first arrived in the U.S. from Egypt, I didn’t speak much English and had no degree. I just wanted to take six units to receive a grant. But from the first day, SMC welcomed me with open arms. The counselors believed in me, supported me, and helped me find my path. They gave me confidence I didn’t know I had.

SMC gave me more than an education — it gave me a second chance, a voice, and a dream to believe in. It taught me that hard work and heart can take you anywhere. I will always be proud to say I am an SMC graduate.

The counselors and staff guided me step by step — they helped me choose the right classes, apply for financial aid, and never gave up on me. They always had time to answer my questions and encouraged me when things got hard.

Never doubt yourself — even if you’re starting from zero, even if your English is not perfect, even if you’re a busy parent or working full-time. Take small steps, ask for help, and don’t be afraid to speak up. SMC has people who care. Believe in yourself the way SMC believes in its students.
