Global Studies

Global Studies is a multi- and interdisciplinary program designed to increase knowledge and understanding of the processes of globalization and their impacts on societies, cultures, and environments around the world. The Global Studies program provides students with a knowledge of critical issues that affect their lives and community, as well as the affairs of other cultures, societies, and nations. An understanding of the world’s social, political, economic, and natural systems and their increasing interdependence, along with an appreciation of the diversity of human culture, will give students a strong background for working in a global economy, for living in a multicultural society, and for making intelligent decisions as global citizens.

The goal of the program is to prepare students for further work in international studies and world affairs through the study of other cultures, world history, political and economic systems, world geography and environment, cross-cultural communication and conflict resolution, and modern languages. The Global Studies program is designed to encourage students to become “global thinkers.” They learn how to relate their knowledge of a particular part of the world to the larger trends and issues that affect all societies: the transnational interactions of peoples, cultures, economies, and politics; the globalizing processes of communication media; technological and environmental changes; law and human rights; the sometimes violent political, ethnic, and religious responses to what is perceived as cultural and economic homogenization on a global scale; and the search for a just, sustainable, and peaceful world.

Transfer Preparation

Many colleges and universities offer baccalaureate degrees in this field. Students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university need to know which courses completed at Santa Monica College will be accepted at the specific college/university. Please consult a Counselor. SMC has transfer articulation agreements with the many UC and CSU campuses, as well as many private and out-of-state institutions.
