A free class on “Ballet and Contemporary Phrasework” led by legendary Israeli dancer Ido Tadmor will open the Santa Monica College Dance Department’s Fall 2023 Masters of Dance series Oct. 5 at 12:30 p.m. in CPC 304, on the main SMC Campus (1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica).

Free Master Classes and Talks with Renowned Dance Professionals

SANTA MONICA, CA — The Santa Monica College (SMC) Dance Department opens its Fall 2023 Masters of Dance series with a line-up of master classes and learning workshops led by dance professionals. The series starts Oct. 5 with Ido Tadmor leading a ballet technique class focusing on strengthening core and transitions, followed by contemporary ballet phrase work.

The Masters of Dance workshops are free, and the public is invited to attend as participants or as observers. Seating is limited and on a first-arrival basis.

The workshops will be held in Room CPC 304 of the SMC Core Performance Center (CPC) on the main SMC Campus (1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica).

The series is sponsored by the SMC Associates (smc.edu/associates) — a private organization that funds speakers and special programs on the Santa Monica College campus — and the SMC Dance Department.

The Fall 2023 Masters of Dance line-up is:

  • Oct. 5 at 12:30 p.m.: Ido Tadmor: “Ballet and Contemporary Phrasework” — CPC 304 (main SMC Campus, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica). Legendary Israeli dancer Ido Tadmor leads a ballet technique class focusing on strengthening core and transitions, followed by contemporary ballet phrase work. A choreographer and judge of professional dance competitions, Tadmor is the former Artistic Director of the Israeli National Ballet and has been a principal dancer in companies such as Bat Dor Dance Company, Bat Sheva Dance Company, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, and Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. He has also worked with major choreographers such as Hans Van Mannen, Ohad Naharin, Alvin Ailey, Vladimir Vassiliev, and Robert North. Free. Sponsored by the SMC Associates and SMC Dance Department.

    Emmy-nominated choreographer and dancer Jillian Meyers leads a free master class in “Making and Moving for the Camera” Oct. 17 at 10:15 a.m. in CPC 304, on the main SMC Campus (1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica), as part of the Santa Monica College Dance Department’s Fall 2023 Masters of Dance series.
    Emmy-nominated choreographer and dancer Jillian Meyers leads a free master class in “Making and Moving for the Camera” Oct. 17 at 10:15 a.m. in CPC 304, on the main SMC Campus (1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica), as part of the Santa Monica College Dance Department’s Fall 2023 Masters of Dance series.
  • Oct. 17 at 10:15 a.m.: Jillian Meyers: “Making and Moving for the Camera” — CPC 304 (main SMC Campus, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica). Emmy-nominated choreographer and dancer Jillian Meyers leads a master class that considers and plays with the tools that — as choreographer or dancer — benefit the capture of dance with the camera. Meyers works at the nexus of commercial, stage, film, and site-specific performance. She choreographed Hozier's "Work Song" and danced on multiple tours with Janet Jackson, was an assistant choreographer for the award-winning film La La Land, and recently wrapped the second season on the NBC show “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” as an episodic co-choreographer. Meyers wears many hats and both reconciles and indulges in all these disciplines in her ongoing genre-bending project “The Seaweed Sisters.” Free.     Dancer/choreographer Holly Johnston leads a free workshop on “Responsive Body: Movement for Radical Joy + Body Liberation” as part of the Santa Monica College Dance Department’s Fall 2023 Masters of Dance series on Oct. 26 at 12:30 p.m. in CPC 304 (on the main SMC Campus at 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica).
    Dancer/choreographer Holly Johnston leads a free workshop on “Responsive Body: Movement for Radical Joy + Body Liberation” as part of the Santa Monica College Dance Department’s Fall 2023 Masters of Dance series on Oct. 26 at 12:30 p.m. in CPC 304 (on the main SMC Campus at 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica).
  • Oct. 26 at 12:30 p.m.: Holly Johnston: “Responsive Body: Movement for Radical Joy + Body Liberation” — CPC 304 (main SMC Campus, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica). Holly Johnston leads an exploration of Responsive Body’s approach to movement, social bonding, sensational pleasure, and radical joy through an RB Movement Map that animates dancing energies. Johnston is the creator of Responsive Body, a social movement and body liberation practice. She has been a Choreographic Fellow at Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC), ODC/Dance Company Theater Artist in Residence, and a SCUBA National Touring Artist. Her podcast, “A Space To Be,” discusses subjects related to culture, politics, embodiment, creativity, history, and shared futures, and she shares her work with Contra-Tiempo Activist Dance Theater as a human performance systems and production ecologist.
