Concurrent Enrollment for High School Students May 7

Special Event Explains Choices for Learning While Earning College Credit

SANTA MONICA, CA — Santa Monica College (SMC) will host a friendly, to-the-point information session about the High School Concurrent Enrollment Program (HSCE) on Tuesday, May 7, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Lecture Hall (Room 202) at the SMC Malibu Campus, 23555 Civic Center Way, Malibu. The campus is easy to access with parking readily available.

The session includes a free webinar that explains how the HSCE program offers students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to take college-level classes — for free — and graduate from high school with college credits. SMC staff will be available at the Malibu event to answer questions about the program and explain how to sign up for classes that will be offered during the summer session.

"We're always looking for ways to broaden our offerings to the younger members of this vibrant community," said Alice Meyering, Associate Dean of the SMC Malibu Campus. “The concurrent enrollment program is a great way for high school students to get a head start on their college education. It’s a great experience that creates a smooth path for them to transition from high school to college, and the Malibu Campus is the ideal place to do it in the summer. We’re offering a variety of credit classes this summer right here in Malibu, and they’re well worth checking into!”

This summer, classes at the SMC Malibu Campus will include the very popular Photo 1 and Drawing 1 classes for creative-minded people, Intro to Business and Individual Financial Planning for students interested in entrepreneurship, and Psychology 1 and Western Art History for general education credits. All are for-credit classes offering transferrable college units that can be applied to earn a certificate, degree, or enter college with advanced standing.

Summer classes are only 6 weeks long and “students will still have all of August free until school starts for fall,” added Meyering. “We think this is a great opportunity for students to use their summer break to build for their future.” The summer classes offered at the Malibu campus were selected after surveying Malibu High School and other local high school students to find the classes that match their interests.

SMC’s summer classes are popular and fill quickly. The information session will explain everything students need to know to sign up for the concurrent enrollment program.

High school students participating in the HSCE program can also attend classes offered at any of the other SMC campuses, including SMC’s Main Campus, SMC Bundy Campus, SMC Performing Arts Center, and SMC Center for Media and Design.
