Spotlight on our Students

As a first-generation college student, Adriana initially found the transition from high school to college daunting. But at SMC, she quickly discovered the support and resources she needed to thrive, such as the Scholars Program and the Writing Center.

I'm a person with Cerebral Palsy and I began my journey at SMC in '93. At the time, I wasn’t sure which path to take. I started with the mindset of taking one class per semester, unsure of my goals due to the challenges that came with my disability. My college journey was on and off for years as I searched for direction.

I loved the supportive community the STEM program has. The faculty and staff genuinely care about the students well-being and success. A community like this is more difficult to find once you transfer to a larger university. 

As an immigrant, first-generation student, it took me 6 years since moving to the U.S. to start my higher education journey.

SMC opened so many doors for me! This was one of the best decisions of my life. SMC gave me the opportunity to excel by providing flexible schedules and supportive professors and counselors. 

SMC helped me be of service to my community and find a career as an educator so I can continue giving back.

The classes that focused on different aspects of African American Studies helped me better understand myself as a Black student and individual, and showed me ways to better my community.

The STEM Program gave me the tools I needed not only to succeed during my transfer journey but also to thrive long after. Even years later as an alumna, I continue to feel the lasting support and impact of what I learned there.
