Request for Preliminary Unofficial Transcript/Exam Score Evaluation
Important notice: we receive many requests and need to prioritize serving SMC students most likely to benefit from the service. We reserve the right to require students to meet with a counselor for an evaluation. Examples where an online evaluation request will not be processed:
More than 50 units from a 4-year university (this includes those with a bachelor's or professional degree).
65 or more units from other California Community Colleges.
Request does not have all transcripts attached.
You just need waivers processed for math, English, or science courses: see the
Request For Placement And Prerequisite Waivers for more information.
We have already completed one online evaluation for you.
Transcripts/exam scores submitted for the evaluation will not be retained by the counseling department. Please bring copies when you meet with a counselor.
General Education (GE) Patterns
We cannot evaluate for transfer to private or out of state colleges/universities
IGETC: For transfer to either UC or CSU campuses, and for students who want to keep their options open. Students who state multiple goals will receive the IGETC evaluation.
Note: UCs are competitive for admission.
CSUGE: Transfer to CSU campuses or SMC B.S. Degree.
SMC Associate Degree: For local SMC Associate degrees only.
Requirements for Evaluation
You must have an SMC student ID number and be currently enrolled, or plan to enroll in courses at SMC next term.
For our preliminary evaluation, we will accept unofficial transcripts and unofficial exam scores, which must be legible and include your name and the name of the U.S. regionally accredited college/university.
Please note: it is critical that official transcripts/exam scores are sent directly from your former institution(s) and/or testing service (e.g., College Board) immediately, to:
SMC Admissions & Records Office
1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90405
Some courses may require a syllabus for a final decision.
This preliminary evaluation is not considered “official” until records are matched with official transcripts/exam scores received by the SMC Admissions & Records Office
Not all courses will be applicable for all GE patterns.
All courses must be on the transcript of the college where they were taken.
Advanced Placement (AP) scores of 3 or higher are typically applicable to these GE patterns. Scores must be submitted on a College Board score report.
International Baccalaureate (IB): select applicability to IGETC and CSUGE only.
CLEP: select applicability to CSUGE and SMCGE only.
We are determining applicability to GE patterns, not course equivalency, major, or certificate requirements. It will be up to the receiving university to evaluate courses for your major or transferable electives.
Our staff are not able to discuss the evaluation with you via email. You will need to consult a counselor.
How do I submit my evaluation request?
You can submit your Evaluation Requests two ways:
Evaluation decisions will be emailed to your SMC student email address within 1-3 weeks depending upon workload.
