How long have you been enrolled in the SMC Emeritus program?
25 years.
What was your occupation prior to retirement?
Lawyer.
What was your highest level of education?
Earned College Bachelor Degree or higher.
What are the top reasons why you value the SMC Emeritus Program?
- The "health" program, especially as instructed by Rebecca Yewell Witjas, has made a tremendous difference in my fitness.
- I've enjoyed participating in writing classes, especially as led by Joe Kronsberg and Monona Wali.
- Through Emeritus I've met many interesting people, both students and faculty, and have developed meaningful friendships over the years.
Pearls of Wisdom: What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
- In general, I think it's better to listen than to give advice. Having a good listener is a great way to figure out what needs to be done.
What are some of your biggest accomplishments in life?
- Working in the field of community redevelopment with municipal clients.
- Participating with other community residents in the planting and maintenance of street trees.
- Creating and maintaining relationships with family and friends over a life that turned out to be a lot longer than I had any reason to expect.
The SMC Emeritus Program has helped me as a lifelong learner because I've remained fully engaged with ideas and people, and maintained a high level of physical fitness.
The best part about being an SMC Emeritus student is how there are always new classes to try and new students to meet, and there's no pressure to figure out what to do after graduation.
