How long have you been enrolled in the SMC Emeritus program?

Since the mid-1980s.  I was a “youngster” in the Emeritus Concert Band but started talking Emeritus classes in 2007 when I turned 50.

What was your occupation prior to retirement?

I was a music teacher in both public and private schools (K-8).  I also taught private music lessons for over 40 years.  I also started a home arts & crafts business in 1985 and sold handmade items including baby items, jewelry, greeting cards, quilts, etc.

What was your highest level of education?

Earned College Bachelor Degree or higher.

What are the top reasons why you value the SMC Emeritus Program?

    1. The Emeritus program is amazing!
    2. The instructors are top-notch in their fields.
    3. There is so much diversity in the curriculum - something for everyone.
    4. The program is very inclusive and allows people of all levels to improve their skills.

Pearls of Wisdom: What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

I would have told myself to do what made made me happy over just getting a job.  I eventually did find my way to doing what I loved.  I also didn’t plan on getting married and having four wonderful children!

How would your advice to your 50-year-old self differ?

Enjoy life!  Keep learning, meet new people, and get out there!  You have so much to give despite what is going on out in the world!  Be positive!  Travel!  We are all more alike than we are different!

What are some of your biggest accomplishments in life?

Of course, my three daughters and my son. Music - I have taught privately and been a music teacher in public and private schools.  I have played the flute for over 50 years - played in the 1984 Olympics Opening Ceremony, the Hollywood Bowl, Israel, Mexico City, a couple of movie soundtracks, in prisons, etc.  Art - Creating art, sewing, doing calligraphy, making books, etc.

The SMC Emeritus Program has helped me as a lifelong learner because every single class I have taken has been fabulous.  It’s nice to meet new people from so many varied backgrounds.  I never plan to stop learning something new!

The best part about being an SMC Emeritus student is the opportunity to study so many different subjects. I love to try something new and see what I love. It’s like going back to college without the term papers and the finals.
