How long have you been enrolled in the SMC Emeritus program?
Not enrolled in Emeritus although i took some singing lessons in the past. I think I'm on this list because of my support of Emeritus as a board member and work to ensure it was not defunded in the student centered funding formula.
What was your occupation prior to retirement?
Member/Chair Santa Monica College Board of Trustees; I still work as a script supervisor.
What was your highest level of education?
Earned College Bachelor Degree or higher.
What are the top three reasons why you value the SMC Emeritus Program?
- Builds community
- Keeps SMC visible
- Relevant to the older (voting) population
Pearls of Wisdom: What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Be more careful! Don't hitchhike alone.
How would your advice to your 50-year-old self differ?
Wouldn't be at all relevant at age 50. :-)
What are some of your biggest accomplishments in life?
A happy functional family. Time spent in public service — first as an education activist — founder, Santa Monica Lifelong Learning Community, founding member and co-chair for 5 years of Community for Excellent Public Schools, 16 years on the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees with accomplishments including beautiful new facilities, protecting Emeritus from state funding revisions, advancing dual enrollment for high school students, helping to establish a collaborative relationship among the City, School District, and SMC; and the building and opening of the Early Childhood Lab School.
The SMC Emeritus Program has helped me as a lifelong learner because It opens doors for me to new friends and new learning even as other doors close or become less appealing.
The best part about being an SMC Emeritus student is opportunities to explore things I haven't yet managed to do!
