We are happy you have chosen to return to SMC. If you are returning to SMC after 1 year or more, you will need to reapply. You can reapply by following the steps below.
Requirements for New Students
- Must be 18 years of age or older; or
- Younger student who has graduated from a regionally accredited high school; or
- 16 years of age and possessing a "Student Score Report" for passing the California High School Proficiency Examination.
- Requirements differ for High School Concurrent Enrollment Students.
Petition for Reinstatement
If you are a returning student but were previously disqualified, your process to re-apply will be different. Please visit Petition for Reinstatement for more information.
Steps to Reapply:
Reapply to SMC
To begin, submit an application through OpenCCC.
Important: If you already have an OpenCCC account under your smc.edu email address, you must change the email address to a personal email account. Using an SMC email address will prevent the processing of your application. If you completed your application correctly, you will receive a confirmation number and an email with the next steps.
Financial Aid (if needed)
SMC offers a variety of financial aid and scholarships to help you reach your goals. Apply for aid early. Over $50 million in aid is offered annually.
Complete Orientation
As a returning student, Orientation may not be required. Once you have submitted your application, look for an email with more information.
Review Course Placement
Once you have applied, you will get an email with information on how to review your Math and English course placement.
Develop Education Plan
Meet with your counselor to assist you with your education plan, course selections, transfer questions, and to learn about campus resources or create your own education plan using the award-winning MyEdPlan.
Enroll in Classes
Congratulations and welcome back to SMC! You have completed all the steps above. Now you can search for classes and enroll in the term you applied for.

Account Recovery
If you have previously created an OpenCCC account but do not remember the username or password, you can recover your account information via email or text message by clicking the "Forgot?" tab on the CCCApply sign in screen. You will receive instructions to the selected recover method for recovering your username, and creating a new password. Santa Monica College does not have access to OpenCCC accounts and is unable to assist students in recovering their account information. Please follow up with OpenCCC if you are unable to recover your account using their account recovery system.
