Basic eligibility criteria and requirements for all students interested in joining
for the first time.
Starting in Fall 2026
- You are a California resident or an AB 540 student.
- You graduated from any public or private California high school/ GED in 2026
- Are directly attending SMC as a First-Time college student.
- Opt-In Join! By September 13, 2026.
- You must meet and maintain your SMC Promise requirements, listed below, by the requirement
deadline of November 1, 2026:
- Financial Aid Requirement: Complete and submit your 2026 - 2027 FAFSA or DREAM.
- It must be received by the SMC Financial Aid Office.
- Unit Requirement: Enroll in 12 units or DSPS- RCL Unit Reduction.
- Must complete Unit Requirement with passing grades.
- Financial Aid Requirement: Complete and submit your 2026 - 2027 FAFSA or DREAM.

Starting in Spring 2027
- You are a California resident or an AB 540 student.
- You graduated from any public or private California high school/ GED in 2026-2027
- Are directly attending SMC as a First-Time college student.
- Opt-In Join! By February 28, 2027.
- You must meet and maintain your SMC Promise requirements, listed below, by the requirement
deadline of April 18, 2027:
- Financial Aid Requirement: Complete and submit your 2026 - 2027 FAFSA or DREAM.
- It must be received by the SMC Financial Aid Office.
- Unit Requirement: Enroll in 12 units or DSPS- RCL Unit Reduction
- Must complete Unit Requirement with passing grades.
- Financial Aid Requirement: Complete and submit your 2026 - 2027 FAFSA or DREAM.

If you do not complete and or maintain your requirements by the deadline means that you will fall out of SMC Promise eligibility and will need to PAY for your fees.
Eligible students with disabilities may be approved for fewer than 12 units as a reasonable
accommodation, DSPS RCL- Unit Reduction, but it must be on file prior to the beginning
