Justice for Minors in California - Jerome Dixon

7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. Online
Justice for Minors in California - Jerome Dixon

As a high school junior, Jerome Dixon was arrested by the Oakland Police Department (CA) as a suspect in a murder investigation. Unconnected to the crime, he was questioned without parental notification. After twenty-five hours of police interrogation he was then coerced into signing an incriminating statement. This statement was used against Dixon in a court of law despite the initial judge’s ruling to the contrary and my subsequent denial of having committed this crime. He is known to the State of California as a “term-lifer”. Twenty-one years later at Dixon's 2011 Parole Hearing and after numerous appeals to lawyers, journalists and judicial stewards, the California Prison Parole Board had difficulty comprehending the facts surrounding my incarceration. They acknowledged his claim of innocence and released Dixon from their custody in October 2011.

The event and discussion will cover Dixon's story as an advocate for social reform. California recently passed a bill that will protect minors in custody. Thanks to the work of Dixon and others, the law makes sure minors always talk with an attorney before deciding whether to waive their Miranda rights. Dixon is a motivational speaker hoping to be an inspiration to the students, faculty and staff at SMC with his amazing story and work for human rights & dignity.
