FRANKENSTEIN - June 1816 - Villa Diodati, near Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Lord Byron was hosting the following guests: Mary Shelley [then Mary Godwin], Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Polidori, and Claire Clairmont. It was an unusually cold and stormy night, which kept the group indoors, and Lord Byron suggested they each write a ghost story to pass the time. Mary Shelley began work on what would become FRANKENSTEIN and John Polidori wrote THE VAMPYRE, an early vampire tale. Both authors influenced later Gothic stories and science fiction.
