SMC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution. How do we define 'servingness'?

Please join the Decolonizing the Academy Committee for the second Community Read of Professor Gina A Garcia's Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) in Practice: Defining "Servingness" at HSIs on

April 27th at 3:00 PM

Thank you to the SMC Library, one of our wonderful co-sponsors; the text is available for free as an E-book.

This discussion of Chapter 10, "Unifying Practice, Research, and Policies at a Hispanic-Serving Research Institution for Systemic Servingness," will be co-facilitated by our Institutional Researcher, Hannah Lawler, and Vanan Yanhnian, the Project Manager of our SMC/UCLA STEM Initiative.

This chapter focuses on a collaboration between UC Santa Cruz and San Jose City College to increase a sense of belongingness for transfer students.

The central question of this chapter is:

How do institutions respond to equity data according to Garcia's four dimensions of servingness:

  1. students' academic and non-academic outcomes;
  2. experiences of students, staff, faculty, and administrators;
  3. internal organizational dimensions;
  4. external influences, such as broader historical, political, and social contexts.

All Community Read events are open to everyone on campus, even if you haven't done the reading! If you cannot attend, the event will be recorded and posted to the Decolonizing the Academy website.

Our goal for the Community Read is to create a collaborative campus-wide space to share information and clarify our goals and values as an institution.

If you need an accommodation due to a disability to participate in an event, contact the Center for Students with Disabilities at dsps@smc.edu or 310-434-4265 at least 5 business days before the event.
