Join us for an intensive and fun, week-long study abroad program exploring Taiwan's rise as a global power. This immersive journey bridges cutting-edge policy with iconic landmarks, tracking how unique ethnic heritages and progressive cultures of tolerance fuel a vibrant digital democracy. From the historic Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and National Palace Museum to the architectural marvel of Taipei 101, you will see history and geopolitics in action. Dive into the "Silicon Shield" at the exclusive TSMC Museum of Innovation to decode the global tech supply chain. Then, journey south to analyze progressive environmental policies firsthand and dive into the coral reefs of Kenting National Park and the National Aquarium. Balance your academic rigor with deep cultural immersion, from exploring self-determined autonomy at an indigenous village to navigating the vibrant, sensory commerce of the world-famous nights markets. Step into the crossroads of Asia and build global insights into today's world demands.
Cost: $1,950 per student with a single room, or $1,665 with a roommate. Does NOT include flight to-from Taiwan, class fees for Global Studies 35, lunch and dinner most days. Breakfast is included most days. Please share with your friends and family!

Course Descriptions
Global Studies 35 - Field Studies Abroad - Taiwan -1 unit
On this field study, students will discover the beautiful city Taipei. Students will learn about the history and cultural traditions and explore locations of unique interest.
Thomas (Tom) Chen is a professor of Life Sciences and the Co-founder/Co-lead of the
Biotechnology Technician Education Program at Santa Monica College. After completing
his undergraduate studies in Taipei and a year of military service, he moved to the
United States and earn his M.S. and Ph.D. in reproductive physiology from the University
of Florida in 1975. He did his postdoctoral training at Colorado State University,
conducted research as a Senior Staff Fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH),
and served as a faculty member at the University of Tennessee until 2000. His research
focuses on reproductive endocrinology, infertility, anti-cancer drugs, and environmental
endocrine disruptors. Tom has also served as a sabbatical visiting professor at the
Medical University of South Carolina and Stanford Medical School and was a fellow
in the Stanford Global Studies program.
Throughout is career, Tom has been deeply committed to equity in science, actively mentoring and guiding students from traditionally marginalized populations into rewarding careers in endocrinology, cell/molecular biology, and biotechnology. An avid global traveler who has explored 26 countries, immersing himself in diverse cultures and connecting with people worldwide. Tom is eager to share his personal knowledge, heritage, and insights into the rich and unique culture of Taiwan to help create a rich and memorable international experience for all participants.

This program is on a first come, first served basis. There are 24 spots available. Once you complete your application, you secure your spot by submitting your deposit and required forms filled out and signed. Your final acceptance into the program will be based on your ability to provide proof of your airline ticket by the deadline.

Eligibility Requirements
- Be a current SMC student and take the offered courses. If you are not currently an SMC student, you may apply online.
- All participants must be 18 years old by January 20, 2027.
- Have a valid passport by January 30, 2027.
- Students must not have any disciplinary infractions.
- If the College is required to evacuate a participant because of injury, illness, or other inability to conclude the trip, the participant shall be responsible for the costs of doing so.
- U.S. citizens do not need a visa to travel to Taiwan. If you are a permanent resident or SMC F-1 visa student, please contact the American Institute in Taiwan to see if you need a visa.
- Pay all program fees and tuition by the deadline. If you are a financial aid recipient, check with the Financial Aid office about using your financial aid to you tuition and fees.
