As of Fall 2025, the English Department will be offering one certificate, the Certificate in Creative Writing. Currently, there are no other degrees or certificates offered in English at Santa Monica College (though we hope there soon will be!).
Even though Santa Monica College does not offer degrees in English or Creative Writing, SMC students can still complete coursework in these subjects that will enable them to transfer to and eventually receive a bachelor's degree in these majors from a four-year institution. Students who are interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in English or Creative Writing should therefore make sure they take courses at Santa Monica College that will be accepted at the specific college/university to which they hope to transfer. Please consult a Counselor to assist in this selection of classes.
Transferring students who wish to qualify for an Associate degree before leaving Santa Monica College should also discuss their plans with a Counselor before selecting classes.
