Students’ basic needs include access to nutritious and sufficient food; safe, secure, and adequate housing – to sleep, to study, to cook, and to shower; healthcare to promote sustained mental and physical wellbeing; affordable technology and transportation; resources for personal hygiene; and childcare and related needs.

Where to Find Additional Food Assistance

  • Our Basic Needs Food Resource List has a number of local resources and links.
  • SMC Students can utilize Bodega, the on-campus student food pantry, which is open Monday through Friday.
  • Local food banks can be located through the greater Los Angeles area using the LA Food Bank Pantry Locator website or by calling 211.
  • Other Resources: 
    • People that receive insurance through Medi-Cal may qualify for supportive nutrition programs such as Project Food Box.
    • Gopuff is giving $50 to people with EBT cards associated with their accounts (up to 200,000 people, once per account, between November 1 through 15 and November 16 through 30)

Basic Needs Program Eligibility

Our Basic Needs services are open to all SMC students regardless of immigration status, race, ethnicity, color, national origin, religion, age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, genetic information, or disability.

We encourage students to make appointments with our counselors who can help determine the best supports available as every students needs are unique.

Basic Needs Assistance

Uwill is an official partner of SMC's Health and Wellness programs. Create a Uwill account to get 24/7 remote basic needs support, mental health support, schedule appointments with SMC Basic Needs Counselors, and get recommendations for local on-campus and off-campus resources based on your needs.

Uwill: Your Virtual Hub for Basic Needs Support
Uwill is a one-stop virtual platform designed to help SMC students access personalized basic needs support. Whether you're looking for help on campus, in your community, or through public benefit programs like CalFresh or Medi-Cal, Uwill is here to help with personalized and confidential support.

By creating an account and opening a case, you’ll be screened for a variety of resources and can connect directly with support services. Any enrolled SMC student can utilize Uwill's services and referrals.

You can also book 1-on-1 sessions with Basic Needs Counselors through Uwill to get help applying for aid and navigating available support.

(Please note, you do not need to create a Uwill account to visit Bodega, the on-campus student food pantry)

How to Get Started:

  1. Visit the SMC Uwill Portal 
  2. Log in using your SMC username and password
  3. Complete the benefits screener to tell us what resources you're looking for (takes about 10 minutes)
  4. Explore available resources, connect with live support, and book appointments with Basic Needs Counselors
